A citizen-organized protest has been scheduled to take place today, June 2nd, in downtown Barberton at Lake Anna, from 1pm – 6pm. Organized on Facebook, as unrest unfolded in several major cities and suburbs, the organizer has been made aware that the protest has been scheduled immediately preceding the Lake Anna graduation parade for St. Augustine School 8th graders and school families. The Barberton Police Department is aware of the protest and they have informed the school principal, Mrs. Faessel, as of this morning.
Due to the grassroots/social media nature of the protest, and in light of the violence seen in some locations, we ask Barbertonians to protest peacefully, if they choose to do so, and encourage their neighbors to do the same. The original organizer has been asked to direct protesters to the area of Lake Anna nearest City Hall.
On a positive note, Barberton residents are invited to gather at Lake Anna at 6:30pm, after the scheduled protest, to support the graduating, St. Augustine 8th graders. These kids are preparing for high school life in public and private schools throughout the area. Families will gather with pom poms and signs, in order to cheer on these students, who deserve their moment to shine, in this turbulent time. High school graduations in the area will be happening tonight, as well.
Please come out tonight, to Lake Anna, near St. Augustine Church and School, near Paige Ave., at 6:30pm, to cheer on local kids downtown, or go to a high school commencement. Let today be a community celebration for our kids. Barberton has a chance to show the surrounding communities what REAL peace looks like. Living in tight-knit unity IS protest in these uncertain days.
