Does Barberton Need Term Limits!
Justin Greer, Barberton 1st
Justin Greer, Barberton 1st ward councilperson, has proposed that the city institute term limits of three terms.(12 years) This would require voter approval.
- A vote by council is needed.
- If not passed by Barberton council then voter signatures would be needed. Then placed on the ballot by voter initiative.
Justin’s thinking is that complacency gets in the way of government and the city does not need career politicians. Two seats would not be subject to term limits; the law director and the finance director. Make comments to: firstname.lastname@example.org
One reason for term limits is the one-party system that Barberton has had in the past. The Democratic Pary, lead by Alan Canfora brags about how no Republicans won before Justin and Bebe success this past fall. Under one Party, who runs is usually decided behind closed doors by the few who are active. And the Mayor CAN (this does not mean he does) get like-minded Democrats to run for the various wards. Council Can (again it does not mean they will) Can rubber stamp the Mayor’s policy. With no second party, the elections are decided in the primaries. Barberton Voters over the past years have had no choice. Competition is good.
The political parties and, especially, the Democratic Party of Summit County is against this idea. This weakens the power of party control. The younger generation, under 35, polls say that they are not as political party-oriented. It has been difficult to get this issue on the ballot in most cities.
Shaun Jaber, Bebe Heitic, and Justin have been donating all or part of their council pay to help the community. Justin Greer made the comment that he wanted to make the changes that were needed in the Barberton council and get out of office. Justin is age 33, Bebe 39, and Shaun 39. Great to get young people involved in the Barberton City government.
